Perlite 3-6mm (10 Litres, approx 1kg)

Product Description

Natural Expanded Volcanic Perlite is an ultra-light mineral that improves soil structure. Low in density, its pocket of air keep soil from compacting around it, allowing roots to easily reach deeply into it.

The Natural Expanded Volcanic Perlite is used to improve the drainage and aeration of any growing medium. The aerated soil drains water effectively, but retain enough moisture in itself for the root of the plant. Its high porosity makes it perfect for use in plant propagation, hydroponic and aquaponic.

Seed Germination

Perlite encourages quicker germination, improved seedling growth and less check when pricking-out of potting on.

Instructions:

Sow on a wet watered mixture of equal parts of perlite and peat moss or add 1 part perlite to 2 parts of ready-mixed potting compost. Sprinkle fine peat moss-perlite mixture over the seeds, and cover with plastic to retain moisture until the seeds have germinated.

Potting Compound

Perlite is used wholly or partly in place of sand or grit in potting compost as it improves aeration, draining and insulation, also facilitates re-wetting.  Perlite can be used to open up ready-mixed loam or peat-based composts.

Instructions:

  • For soil-less composts, mix 3 or 4 parts of peat moss with 1 part of perlite (80/20).
  • For loam based compost, mix equal parts of sterilized loam, peat and perlite (1:1:1) plus limestone and nutrients.
  • Alternatively, a 1:2:1 mix may be used. Mix thoroughly, then water well after planting, and feed continuously.

Rooting Cuttings

Perlite speeds up rooting, reducing the risk of damping off, provides an optimum balance of air and water, and makes water logging almost impossible, It also minimised damage to roots and check to growth during transplanting. Recommended for use in seed starting, as a rooting medium, soil amendment and golf green amendment. Wet before using to prevent airborne dust.
